Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Nebojša Stefanović, PhD, accompanied by Chief of the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces, General Milan Mojsilović, visited the “Corporal Momčilo Gavrić“ barracks in Loznica today.

After the briefing on the measures taken so far and plans for the revitalization of the barracks, Minister of Defence looked round the dormitories in the barracks, as well as the buildings that have been reconstructed so far.

Minister Stefanović says that the renovation of this barracks is a very important project and that full reconstruction and construction of the barracks, dormitories, command and all auxiliary buildings will be completed in the next two years, as planned. This will help this unit become a modern infantry battalion in line with international standards.

— Today we discussed what we could do to encourage young people to choose the military profession. In addition to the increase in salaries agreed on with President Vučić, the improvement of working conditions, such as the construction of such modern barracks, will have an important role in that — the Minister of Defence said.

The Minister thanked the Mayor of Loznica, Mr Vidoje Petrović, for the support the local self-government had thus far provided to the construction works in the barracks.

— This is a very important project because we want to have a part of our armed forces here in Loznica and develop our armed forces in all parts of our country. Our goal is to increase our capacities, but also to increase the number of service members through staff recruitment — emphasized Minister Stefanović.

The barracks in Loznica bears the name “Corporal Momčilo Gavrić” now, instead of “Klupci”, as it was formerly called, in memory of the Serbian Army’s youngest corporal in the First World War, who joined the 6th Artillery Regiment of the Drina Division as an eight-year-old boy.
