— Eighty years have passed since the heroic liberation of Belgrade in World War II. Centuries ago, unwavering love for freedom gave strength to our people to emerge victorious in wars.

We will never forget the courage of our ancestors in the fight for justice against many times stronger enemies. To all brave women and men who laid down their lives for the freedom of our people, may the memory of them and gratitude live forever — President Vučić wrote on his Instagram account.

After several days of heavy fighting, members of the People’s Liberation Army of Yugoslavia, supported by the Soviet allies, liberated Belgrade on 20th October 1944. It is one of the greatest and most important battles in the Balkans in World War II.
