Exquisite Skills and Technical Breakthrough of ASEWG Units

At the radar positions of the 126th ASEWG Brigade units, professional personnel are undergoing intensive training with long-range surveillance GM-400 radars and medium-range tactical GM-200 radars, recently put into operational use by the Serbian Armed Forces.
The training curriculum for these state-of-the-art radar systems for air surveillance and control includes theoretical contents on the principles of operation and practical work on how to handle and maintain them.
Training Instructor Lieutenant Stefan Filipović underlines the positive experience in working with the long-range radar and good features of the GM-400 model the 126th ASEWG Brigade units are equipped with. He states that the unit members were incorporated in the duty combat shift of the permanently deployed forces after completing comprehensive training in handling the radar, adding that each individual must be absolutely familiar with the radar’s functioning and all necessary basic maintenance actions and procedures of the asset.
— The essence of the combat shift’s work is its persistent monitoring of the situation and detecting aerial targets, the unit members being specially trained to detect not only the targets with specific itineraries, low altitudes and low speeds, but also the targets with small reflective surfaces, says Lieutenant Filipović.
Second Lieutenant Nataša Marković, radar squad commander, explains that the GM-200 radar complements the GM-400 radar surveillance and that this system, mounted on a high-performance off-road vehicle, is particularly successful in detecting targets with a small reflective surface, primarily remotely piloted aircraft.
—In the professional-specialist sense, training with the GM-200 and GM-400 is not that different, because we apply similar or the same technological solutions. That is why the GM-200 radar training focuses specifically on the crew emplacing the radar position, shifting the radar from a marching to a combat-ready position and preparing for operational work. Compared to the radars that the unit has been equipped with before, the transfer is much simplified because all the equipment is now integrated on one vehicle - concludes 2LT Nataša Marković.
The procurement of new-generation radars improved considerably not only the spatial and information capabilities of the ASEWG units, but also the ability to guide fighter aviation and direct air defense missile units to assigned aerial targets. The operational use of GM radars met the highest airspace control standards and enhanced the ability of the entire Serbian Armed Forces to address the challenges of modern warfare.
