Kyr Porfirije, Patriarch of Serbia, has presented today the icons of St. George and St. Stefan, the Despot of Serbia, to the Guard as a gift to this unit from the brotherhood of the Kovilj Monastery.
The ceremony of handing the icons, which have become part of the Guard’s liturgical premises since today, has been attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Miloš Vučević and Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff General Milan Mojsilović.
Minister Vučević has stated that this is an important day for all Guard members, Serbian Armed Forces and Ministry of Defence, and announced a special commemoration of the ten-year anniversary of the return of the Chaplaincy Service to barracks and military facilities.
Kyr Porfirije, Patriarch of Serbia, has pointed out that he is emotionally moved today for being in the premises of the Serbian Armed Forces he feels very close with and at home, having in mind that, with the Holy Synod’s blessing, since 2001, he has been working on establishing the Chaplaincy Service in the military and taking it back to the place where it belongs.
Guard’s Commander Brigadier General Nikola Dejanović has expressed his gratitude for the icons that have been bestowed, stressing that the unit members receive them as a legacy for all future generations of Guardsmen and all those who pledged themselves and committed their lives to serving and defending our fatherland, the Republic of Serbia.
That has been the first visit by Patriarch Porfirije to the Serbian Armed Forces Guard during which he visited, beside the Guard’s liturgical premises, the unit’s memorial room.
