A military ceremony on the occasion of sending off a new contingent of the Serbian Armed Forces to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has been held at the “Knjaz Mihailo” Barracks in Niš today.
The contingent, which will be part of UNIFIL for the next six months, includes an infantry company from the 3rd Army Brigade, staff officers and a group of specialists in charge of supporting our contingent.
They will be carrying out responsible peacekeeping tasks in the Area of Operation, thus continuing a long tradition of our armed forces’ participation in UN peacekeeping operations, which began exactly in the Middle East 68 years ago.
At today’s ceremony, Head of the Operations Directorate (J-3) of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff Major General Tiosav Janković has presented the national flag to Commander of the Infantry Company Major Igor Savić, expressing his belief that this contingent will be performing the assigned tasks in the mission conscientiously and responsibly, thus representing our country and armed forces in a dignified manner in the international environment.
The send-off was also attended by Deputy Commander of the Army Major General Slađan Stamenković, Commander of the 3rd Army Brigade Colonel Vladan Milosavljević, representatives of the Serbian Armed Forces’ units, local government bodies, and relatives and friends of the soldiers and officers departing for the peacekeeping operation.
Members of the Serbian Armed Forces began participating in this peacekeeping operation on 21 December 2010. In addition to the infantry company, which performs its tasks as part of the Spanish battalion, and staff and specialist officers, the Serbian Armed Forces also deploy a force protection platoon within the Italian contingent in this mission.
