The Serbian Armed Forces’ CBRN units are equipped and trained to organize and provide CBRN security of the Serbian Armed Forces while conducting operations and assisting civil authorities in remediating the consequences of natural disasters, technical-technological and other accidents.
The most significant unit of this kind is the 246th CBRN Battalion, which, is intended to provide security of Serbian Armed Forces’ units, in case weapons of mass destruction are used.
In order to sustain and enhance the capabilities and readiness to carry out specific tasks in all three missions of the Serbian Armed Forces, the unit members are trained persistently; they practice the techniques, actions and procedures till they become automatic, following the adopted procedures and highest standards in this field.
The focus of this training cycle, which takes place at the “Ravnjak” Training Ground in Kruševac, is on individual training in performing the tasks of protecting the Serbian Armed Forces from nuclear and chemical accidents, i.e. in conducting radiological-chemical-biological decontamination of people, weapons, technical assets, land and facilities on the ground.
The training process involves the use of insulating equipment for complete protection of personnel when working with contaminants, means of detection, dosimetry and decontamination, the most significant being the domestically produced modern MPD-09 (mobile decontamination platform), as well as the sources of radioactive contamination that simulate ionizing radiation.
Successful implementation of training in the 246th CBRN Battalion improves additionally the skills of the unit’s professional staff needed to perform the tasks during SAF operations, as well as readiness to provide effective support to civil authorities in alleviating the consequences of technical-technological and other accidents.
