A military ceremony was held today at the "Banjica" barracks in Belgrade for the Serbian Armed Forces Military Police squad deploying to the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus.
It is the first Serbian Armed Forces unit deployed to Cyprus after a three-year break. Earlier, from 2011 to 2018, the Serbian Armed Forces infantry platoon took part in this mission.
The Military Police squad will be engaged as a part of the British contingent in this mission, which will be the first joint engagement of the Serbian and British Armed Forces after the Second World War.
The Head of the Peacekeeping Operations Centre, Colonel Mirjana Milenković, handed over the flag of the Republic of Serbia to the squad leader, Sergeant First Class Viktor Urošević, telling him that they should perform all assigned tasks conscientiously and responsibly, represent the Serbian Armed Forces members in the best light and build good relations with all participants in the mission.
The ceremony was attended by the UK Ambassador to Serbia Sian MacLeod and the Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces representatives.
The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus was set up by the UN Security Council Resolution in 1964, and the Serbian Armed Forces began participating in the mission on 21 October 2010.
