In parallel with the acquisition and modernization programs implemented in both their land and air components, the Serbian Armed Forces are conducting intensive training with modern combat systems at training grounds and exercise areas.
The training, which is one of the major tasks of the Serbian Armed Forces, takes place across all units that have been provided with newly introduced and modernized assets, among which is the 23rd Self-Propelled Howitzer Artillery Battalion armed with the improved version of 122 mm 2S1 M21 self-propelled howitzers.
This leads to the professional servicemen acquiring excellent skills in using this asset in combat, which, after an advanced fire control system has been installed, has largely enhanced firepower, speed, firing accuracy and the ability to hit the target simultaneously with several missiles.
Chief Sergeant Major in the 23rd Self-Propelled Howitzer Artillery Battalion, Sergeant Major Mladen Miletić, states that this training involves modernized systems with significantly reduced time between detecting and engaging a target.
“The improved KOT1 V2 Command APC receives directions from the observation post, processes them and, in a split second, forwards them to the self-propelled howitzer, which, in a short time, prepares and acquires the elements and is ready for all firing tasks,” said SM Miletić, adding that the APC receives directions using the latest computing system.
The calculation operator of the Command APC, Lance Corporal Milorad Bačević, has pointed out that his duty is very complex and challenging, dealing with calculation and preparation of initial firing elements, which he sends further to the units’ firing positions. As to his experience, he has emphasized that he participated in a number of artillery live firing, adding that it was his work and commitment that earned him a referral to a career development course leading to his first NCO rank.
Lance Corporal Andrija Gačić performs the role of a crewman of a 122 mm self-propelled howitzer. His task is to prepare the ammunition and load the howitzer for firing.
— It takes huge effort to perform this role, and the job, which I am really fond of, is very challenging, which also applies to the military profession. I would like to take the occasion to invite all interested young men and women to apply to a competition for admission to the tank, artillery and mechanized units of the Serbian Armed Forces by February 15 2025, to join us and experience all the challenges and advantages of this honorable vocation — said LCpl Gačić.
The job advertisement for admission to the tank, mechanized and artillery units of the Serbian Armed Forces is a chance for young people to get secure employment, retirement benefits, high-quality military health insurance for themselves and their family members, as well as opportunities for continuous training and advancement during their military career.
