Serbian Statehood Day

Today, Serbia celebrates the Statehood Day with a series of events, in commemoration of Sretenje (Candlemas) in 1804, when the First Serbian Uprising took place, and in commemoration of the same date in 1835, when the first modern constitution of Serbia was adopted.

Acting as an envoy of the Serbian President and Supreme Commander Aleksandar Vučić, Minister of Defense Bratislav Gašić, accompanied by the Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff, General Milan Mojsilović, and Guard Commander Brigadier General Željko Furundžić, laid a wreath today at the Monument to the Unknown Hero on Mt. Avala to mark Serbia’s Statehood Day.

Following the wreath-laying ceremony, accompanied by the Honour Guard and the playing of the national anthem, Minister Gašić wrote the following message in the monument’s guestbook:

“Free, persistent and brave. Serbs are a nation that, thanks to their spiritual strength and willpower, has never been broken, despite numerous attempts throughout history.

Bowing to the shadows of you who once defended the honor and freedom of the Serbian people and the state, today we preserve your legacy by proudly carrying the national symbols of the Republic of Serbia.

May you rest in peace.

Long live free and constitutional Serbia!”

As part of the celebration of Statehood Day, members of the Serbian Armed Forces participated in giving military honors at a state ceremony in Orašac, which was attended by the Minister of Defense Bratislav Gašić and the Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff, General Milan Mojsilović with members of their boards, as well as in numerous ceremonies in cities and municipalities across the country.

Today's activities were preceded by an honorary artillery fire on the occasion of the Statehood Day, which was carried out by members of the Serbian Armed Forces Guard in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac and Niš.
