Answering the question of the reporters regarding the meeting with his Iraqi colleague, Minister Sutanovac said that one of the main goals of his visit was to make sure that all the clauses in the contract signed between our defense industry and Iraq were being fulfilled. Sutanovac also conveyed the good impressions of his Iraqi colleagues regaridng this contract. The Minister of Defense of Iraq said that soon the Iraqi Government would take over the control over the whiole territory of Iraq and that for the economic growth of the country, it would be good to have strong security ties.
Future cooperation would be based, as Sutanovac said, on the areas of defense and the interior affairs, as wel as on the infrastructure of projects. He expects the Prime Minister of Iraq to soon come and visit the Serbian PM Mirko Cvetkovic.
As to the relations between NATO and Serbia, minister said that the contacts at the level of Chiefs of Forces had been discontinued 6 months ago, and the Ministry hd tried to point out that this could cause a big problem in the public and international relations. He reminded that the Presidet of Serbia Boris Tadic had already announced the possibility of increasing the number of troops due to the current situation in the region and Kosovo, which is recognized as a challenge and even as a risk. Kosovo lacks, as Sutanovac stated, strong crime police which would portect the safety of all citizens, while Kosovo is by no means endangered from the outside. The process of cancelling the Ground Safety Zone had nothing to do with the current situation.
As for the future Chief of General Staff, Minister said that our army had several good generals who could readily assume this responsible function and that he was waiting for the President’s decision with regards to this issue. He also added that he was pleased with the current relations in the defense system.
As for the possibility that a woman be appointed as Defense Minister, Sutanovac said that considered this to be a very normal thing as there are ladies who are very apt at managing large systems.
