Missions and Tasks of the Serbian Armed Forces

The missions and tasks of the Serbian Armed Forces are being developed on the grounds of the Republic of Serbia’s commitment, characteristics of a modern armed conflict and the environment in which the Serbian Armed Forces can complete their tasks. All of this determines the organization, content of the preparations, engagement and safety of the Serbian Armed Forces.

The missions and tasks of the Serbian Armed Forces are defined by the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia in accordance with the Constitution, and are based on the inalienable right of the Republic of Serbia on individual and collective defence, in accordance with Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations and fundamental principles of the international law governing the use of force.

The missions of the Serbian Armed Forces are as follows:

  1. Defence of the Republic of Serbia from external armed threats;
  2. Participation in building and preserving peace in the region and the world;
  3. Support to civil authorities in combating security threats.

The assigned missions are being realized through the completion of different tasks.

Defence of the Republic of Serbia from external armed threats is realized through:

  • deterrence from armed threats:
  • defence of the territory and
  • defence of Air Space.

Participation in building and preserving peace in the region and the world is realized through:

  • participation in international military cooperation and
  • participation in multinational operations.

Support to civil authorities in combating security threats is realized through:

  • assistance to civil authorities in combating internal security threats, terrorism, separatism and organized crime and
  • assistance to civil authorities in responding to natural disasters, technological accidents and other disasters.

The permanent task of the Serbian Armed Forces is training and preparation of commands, units and institutions for completing assigned missions and tasks.
